Difference between American comic books and Japanese comic books

Do you know these characters? So, do you know what is different between this picture and this picture? Somebody may know the characters are from comic books. Today, I'll talk about difference between American comic books and Japanese comic books.

There are many comic books as popular entertainment in the world, and some comic books influence contemporary societies and create big trend. The most popular comic in the world is from The USA, and the second is from Japan. In both the two countries, comics have a huge market, but American and Japanese comic books are very different regarding pictures, stories, and process of designs.

Before I'll explain about these differences, I want to explain what comic books are. The graph is simple information about American and Japanese comic books. If you don't know comic books, it will be helpful to understand what they are. Comic books have picture and writing.

Ok, I’ll talk about the pictures. Pictures on American comic books are more three dimensional than pictures on Japanese comic books. (show picture) Most American comic books are computer painted and printed in color. On the other hand, most Japanese comic books are not 3D and painted with just black ink. (show picture) . I think the traditional painting influenced pictures of comic books. This is an American famous poster which was painted almost 100 years ago. The other one is Japanese which was painted at same time. The American picture is very realistic and colourful, but the Japanese picture is not. The Japanese picture has outline of the person, and the color is simple. Japanese comic books are black and white color because it is more expensive to make color comic books than simple ones. Color comics are very beautiful and clear than monotonic comic books, but it needs a lot of money to print it. Because colors are just white and black, Japanese comic books sometimes have problems. For example, when people are happy or sad, their faces turn red or pale. It's difficult to express these emotions with just black ink. Therefore, there are many unique way of expressing emotions in Japanese comic books. (show picture) What do you think about their face? Are they angry, sad or happy? This is a hint. The lines mean pale, and this is a vein. The person is sad, and this person is angry. There are many more unique expressions in Japanese comic books.

Now, I want to talk about difference in stories. Most stories in American comic books focus on action stories, especially heroes. The American comic books are constructed clearly so that they have introductions, big developments and conclusion. For example, when some trouble happened, a hero rushes to the place and fights with a bad enemy, and finally, the hero rescues people who are in trouble. After "Super man" made a huge hit, publishing companies tried to make popular heroes like "Super man", so that’s why most stories in American comic books have tendencies to appear heroes. Also, most authors of American comic books are male, and they try to make stories for men or boys. However, Japanese comic books mostly focus on the psychological descriptions such as friendship, love and, mutual affection and the comics are about different topics. For one reason, many female authors publish comic books for not only boys but also women or girls readers, and the market is huge. Another reason is that there are no restricted law in comic books in Japan. Comic creators can make any stories and pictures freely, even it's about drug, extreme violence or murder. Also, the USA doesn't have any publishing law about expression, but There are Comic Code Authority in the USA, and if the book doesn’t satisfy the CCA, it can’t get the label. Most book store in the USA don’t want to sell comic books without the label, so publishing companies follow the CCA , and they don’t make stories which are extreme violence or murder.

Finally, American comics are made by many different people. The processes are divided into 5 such as writer, penciler, inker, colorist, and letterer. After writers come up interesting story, penciler draw rough drafts, and then, inkers make clean copy of it. After that, colorist decides what color matches the picture and paint. Finally, letterers write character's talking. Because each progress is completed by professionals at each field, comics can be high quality. However, instead of these things, the originality may be lost. Therefore, famous hero’s stories such as Superman, Spiderman, and Batman have published serially in comic books for a long time, over 40 years. In contrast to the American process, Japanese comics are usually created by one person, so the person must have ability to draw picture and invent story. However, the comic authors can create comics without any restrictions. Therefore, every pictures and stories are much different in each comic book, and they have individuality.

The two of American comic books and Japanese comic books have many differences, but both comic books are loved by many people not only in the two countries but also all over the world.

1.to break the ice............to begain a conversation with a stranger
2.a breeze......................something easy for a person to do
3.come rain or shine..........no matter how hard it is to do
4.a fair-weather friend.............a person who doesn't help when a friend is in trouble
5.full of hot air.....................talking a lot but never doing what one says
6.to have one's head in the clouds......not to know or understand what is going on
7.to rain cats and dogs..........................to rain very hard
8.to save something for a rainy day.....to prepare for trouble, usually by saving money
9.snowed under...................................having a lot of work to do
10.to weather the storm..........................to wait and be patient until things get better
